Caring for the Courageous

We had a wonderful time at our Caring for the Courageous event! Last year, we had about 34 women in attendance and made 50 chemotherapy care bags. This year we had 97 women in attendance and made almost 300 chemotherapy care bags. The outpouring of support has been amazing! We are so grateful to each and everyone of you who donated items, money and your time. It doesn’t matter if you donated one item or 25 items, $5 or $50, we could not of done this without each and every one of you.

Two years ago, we asked women who have battled cancer what items they would find helpful, they gave us a list and that is how we chose our items. In each of our chemotherapy care bags, we put the following items: Lemon drops {for dry mouth}, Fiji water, a crossword puzzle, a journal and pen, cozy socks, a mug, Purell , tissues, peppermint tea {for nausea}, $5 Starbucks gift card, chap stick, hand lotion, and a hand written note of encouragement. Each lady who attended Caring for the Courageous went down an assembly line to grab a tote and one of each item listed. We loved having everyone be hands on and get involved.

We had the support of Faith Family Church. They took up an offering at their Flourish women’s gathering in February and collected $3,135 for our cause. In addition, they donated 60 care bags through their connect groups.  They also let us use their banquet room to host our event and I appreciate it so much. Local businesses donated baked goods. Sweet T’s Confections donated cupcakes, Scrumdiddlyumptious donated chocolate chips cookies, and The Cake Lady donated cutouts. Our local Giant Eagle also donated a $25 gift card. Lisa Burwell made a generous donation to cover the cost of all of out food. THANK YOU all SO much!

Simply Give is so happy to be supporting the courageous women battling cancer in our community. This has been on my heart to reach out to women battling cancer. After praying about what I could do to reach out, Jacqui Rini came to me with the idea to make these care bags. You can check out her blog by clicking HERE.  We are both so thrilled to head up such a great cause, but more importantly we are so thrilled to have support of so many. THANK YOU!

After assembling our care bags, we had two women share their testimony and battle with cancer. It was very inspiring and inspirational. Polly shared that she appreciates every day moments so much more. She really relied on God to get through this time. She is beyond grateful to God that she is cancer free to enjoy life with her husband and two daughters.

Brandi, wife and mom to two sweet girls,  shared about her battle with breast cancer. She opted to have a double mastectomy. One of my favorite things she said was, “I am not attached to my hair and breast, they are attached to me.” Profound. Her zeal for life is amazing, her positive attitude and faith in God is truly inspiring. She shared her own personal battle with cancer all while her  sweet mama was welcomed into Heaven, battling cancer herself. It has been a few months since her mother entered Heaven’s gates, and I know she is doing exactly what her mom wanted her to do, sharing the good news of Jesus.

We ended the evening praying over the bags and for any woman who may be battling cancer. There is just something about 100 women in a room, thanking God for his goodness and peace that will overcome these women receiving the bags.

Over the next week, we will spend time delivering to several local cancer centers. I’ll post about it when all of the drop off’s are complete!!

Thank you Sabrina Hall Photography for donating your time and talents to capture our event. You are a blessing!!!
